Replacing a showerhead is the easiest plumbing project. The most expensive part is choosing one — modern options are much better than the typical 2.0 GPM compliance models found in builder-grade homes.
Tools & Materials You’ll Need
Tools
- Channel-lock pliers (with rag/tape to protect finish)
- Towel
Materials
- New showerhead
- Plumber’s tape (PTFE)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Remove Old Showerhead
Wrap a rag around the connection. Turn counter-clockwise with channel-locks. Should come off in 30 seconds.
Clean the Shower Arm Threads
Wrap a damp cloth around the threads. Wipe off any old tape or debris.
Apply Plumber’s Tape
Wrap 3–4 turns clockwise (looking at threads from the showerhead’s perspective).
Install New Showerhead
Hand-tighten clockwise. Final 1/4 turn with wrapped channel-locks.
Test for Leaks
Run water at full hot and cold. Check connection for any drips.
Premium showerheads (Hansgrohe, Grohe, Moen Velocity) deliver dramatically better experience than 2.0 GPM compliance models. The water-saving compliance is enforced at sale; you can use any showerhead once installed (federal regulations are about manufacturers, not consumers).
Don’t over-tighten
Cracking the shower arm fitting requires opening the wall to fix.
Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls
Builder-grade replacement
Customer replaced a 2.0 GPM low-flow showerhead with a premium 2.5 GPM rain head. Total install: 8 minutes. Customer described the shower as “transformatively better.”
When to Call a Plumber Instead
DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:
- Shower arm itself is broken
- Threads stripped
- Wall behind shower water-damaged
