Replacing a showerhead is the easiest plumbing project. The most expensive part is choosing one — modern options are much better than the typical 2.0 GPM compliance models found in builder-grade homes.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Tools

  • Channel-lock pliers (with rag/tape to protect finish)
  • Towel

Materials

  • New showerhead
  • Plumber’s tape (PTFE)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Remove Old Showerhead

Wrap a rag around the connection. Turn counter-clockwise with channel-locks. Should come off in 30 seconds.

Tip: If seized: apply penetrating oil and wait 15 min.

Clean the Shower Arm Threads

Wrap a damp cloth around the threads. Wipe off any old tape or debris.

Tip: Inspect threads for damage. If chewed up, replace shower arm too ($15).

Apply Plumber’s Tape

Wrap 3–4 turns clockwise (looking at threads from the showerhead’s perspective).

Tip: Tape direction matters — clockwise or threads will unwind tape during install.

Install New Showerhead

Hand-tighten clockwise. Final 1/4 turn with wrapped channel-locks.

Tip: Don’t over-tighten. Snug + 1/4 turn is enough.

Test for Leaks

Run water at full hot and cold. Check connection for any drips.

Tip: A drip means inadequate tape or cross-threading. Re-do.

Pro Notes from Plumb Inc
Mike Torres · Master Plumber, serving Los Angeles since 2014

Premium showerheads (Hansgrohe, Grohe, Moen Velocity) deliver dramatically better experience than 2.0 GPM compliance models. The water-saving compliance is enforced at sale; you can use any showerhead once installed (federal regulations are about manufacturers, not consumers).

Don’t over-tighten

Cracking the shower arm fitting requires opening the wall to fix.

Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls

Sherman Oaks

Builder-grade replacement

Customer replaced a 2.0 GPM low-flow showerhead with a premium 2.5 GPM rain head. Total install: 8 minutes. Customer described the shower as “transformatively better.”

When to Call a Plumber Instead

DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:

  • Shower arm itself is broken
  • Threads stripped
  • Wall behind shower water-damaged

Frequently Asked Questions

Best showerhead under $50?

Moen Engage Magnetix, Speakman Anystream, Niagara Earth.

High-flow vs low-flow?

Most homeowners prefer 2.5 GPM. Some 1.5 GPM models feel strong with smart spray patterns.

Multi-head systems?

Pro install — requires modifying valve. $1,800+ retrofit.

How long do showerheads last?

10–15 years for quality. Hard water shortens this.

Hand-held vs fixed?

Hand-held versatile (cleaning, kids, etc.). Fixed simpler.
