TL;DR

Fill valve failure causes toilet to cycle randomly or run continuously. Replace with universal Fluidmaster ($15) in 30 minutes. Same procedure for all toilet brands.

  • Sponge
  • Bucket

Materials

  • Replacement fill valve (Fluidmaster 400A common) $15-$25

Step-by-Step Instructions

Confirm Fill Valve Issue

Drop food coloring in tank. Wait 15 min. No color in bowl but tank refills periodically = fill valve. Color in bowl = flapper.

Tip: Different fixes for different problems.

Shut Off Water

Close shutoff valve at wall. Flush. Sponge remaining water from tank.

Tip: Use a towel for spill drips.

Remove Old Fill Valve

Disconnect supply line at bottom of tank. Loosen nut underneath holding fill valve in. Lift old valve out.

Tip: Note water level mark on inside of tank for reference.

Install New Fill Valve

Adjust new valve’s height by twisting upper section. Should sit about 1 inch below top of overflow tube. Insert through hole. Tighten lock nut underneath.

Tip: Hand tight is enough.

Reconnect Supply and Adjust

Connect supply line. Slowly open shutoff. Watch tank fill — should stop at proper level. Adjust float per manufacturer instructions if water level wrong.

Tip: Most fills valves have a clip or screw to adjust float height.

Universal Fluidmaster fill valves work in 95% of toilets. Bring old valve to hardware store if you’re unsure. The $15 universal saves you searching for brand-specific parts.

Don’t over-tighten

Plastic threads on lock nut crack easily.

Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls

Beverly Hills

Ghost flushing for years

High-end toilet randomly refilling at night. Fill valve had been failing for ~2 years. New universal Fluidmaster: $18 + 25 minutes. Solved.

When to Call a Plumber Instead

DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:

  • Tank cracked
  • Multiple fill valve replacements have failed
  • Specialty toilet (rear flush, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Universal vs brand-specific?

Universal works in 95% of toilets. Brand-specific only if specifically required.

How long do fill valves last?

7-10 years. Hard water shortens.

Why does my toilet refill on its own?

Slow flapper leak (different fix) OR fill valve not shutting off completely. Color test reveals which.

Can I just clean the existing fill valve?

Sometimes — debris in valve can be flushed. But replacement is usually faster and more reliable.

Should I replace fill valve and flapper together?

If both are 7+ years old: yes. $25 total + 45 minutes for both.

Need professional help in Los Angeles?
