How to Fix a Leaking Dishwasher
Most dishwasher leaks are at the door gasket, drain hose, or water inlet — none requires a service call.
TL;DR
Dishwasher leaks come from door gasket (replace), drain hose (tighten or replace), water inlet valve (replace), or air gap (clean). Identify location first by running short cycle and observing where water appears.
What’s in this guide
- Diagnose leak location
- Door gasket fix
- Drain hose fix
- Inlet valve fix
- Air gap maintenance
Dishwasher leaks fall into 4 categories based on where water appears. Diagnosing correctly saves a service call.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Run a Short Cycle and Observe
Place towels around dishwasher base. Run a short cycle. Note where water first appears — front (door), bottom front (gasket), bottom rear (drain hose), under sink (drain hose at sink connection), under unit (inlet valve).
Replace Door Gasket
Open door, peel old gasket out of channel. Press new gasket in starting from one side. Run a short cycle to test seal.
Tighten/Replace Drain Hose
Drain hose runs from dishwasher to under-sink connection. Check both ends — hose clamps may be loose. If clamps are tight but hose leaks, replace the hose.
Inspect Air Gap
The chrome cylinder on top of the sink (some homes) is the air gap. Remove top cap, check for clogs. Clean monthly.
California Title 22 requires a high loop or air gap on every dishwasher discharge. Inspectors fail installs without one. After installing 200+ dishwashers, the failure pattern from skipping this is consistent: dishwasher backs up nightly during normal use until the high loop is added.
Disconnect power before electrical work
Inlet valve replacement involves the electrical inlet. Cut power at breaker first.
Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls
Forgotten dishwasher inlet plug
New homeowner installed a garbage disposal without removing the dishwasher inlet plug from the disposal. Three days later, dishwasher backed up. 5-minute fix.
When to Call a Plumber Instead
DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:
- Inlet valve replacement (electrical)
- Dishwasher itself is failing (motor, control board)
- Built-in unit with inaccessible connections
- Repeat leaks despite multiple repair attempts
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a dishwasher last?
10–13 years average. Hard LA water shortens by 1–2 years.
Why does my dishwasher leak only at end of cycle?
Drain pump or drain hose issue. Inspect both.
Can I run my dishwasher with a leaking gasket?
Brief use is fine but long-term causes water damage to cabinet base.
Inlet valve clicking but no water flow?
Failed solenoid in the valve. Replace.
Do I need air gap or high loop?
Code varies by jurisdiction. Most LA cities accept high loop; some (Santa Monica, West Hollywood) require air gap.
