How to Fix a Dripping Tub Faucet

TL;DR
Tub faucet drips trace to either the cartridge (handle valve worn) or tub spout diverter. Cartridge replacement is same procedure as shower valve. Spout replacement is $30 and 15 minutes.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Determine Drip Source
Drip from tub spout while shower running = spout diverter failure. Drip from spout with all valves off = cartridge failure.
Replace Spout (Diverter Issue)
Slip-on spouts: loosen setscrew underneath, slide off. Threaded: unscrew counter-clockwise. Replace with new spout matching length and connection type.
Cartridge Replacement (Handle Drip)
Same procedure as shower valve cartridge. Shut off main water, remove handle and trim, swap cartridge. See shower faucet guide for details.
Test
Restore water. Test through full hot/cold range. Verify no drip from spout when shower is engaged.
Failed spout diverter is the most common shower complaint we hear: “shower works but water still comes out tub.” 95% of the time it’s a $30 spout replacement that takes 15 minutes. Don’t pay $185+ for service call before checking the spout.
Don’t over-tighten new spout
Cracking the wall pipe behind the spout is a major in-wall repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does tub cartridge last?
5-8 years SFV. 10-15 years coastal LA.
Why diverter fail?
Internal rubber wears, mineral buildup prevents proper sealing.
Can I just replace whole valve?
Yes but in-wall work, $1,200-2,200. Cartridge replacement at $185-385 is much cheaper.
Why does spout drip after shower?
30-60 second drip is normal residual water. Continuous drip = diverter failure.
Style differences between brands?
Functionally similar. Visually different. Most installs are brand-specific cartridges.
