Traditional sewer repair vs. trenchless — what’s the real difference?

Traditional Sewer Repair

  • Excavate a trench 4–8 feet deep across your yard, driveway, or landscaping
  • Remove and replace the damaged pipe section
  • Backfill and restore surface (often done poorly)
  • Timeline: 3–7 days minimum
  • Cost: $5,000–$20,000+ depending on depth, length, surface materials
  • Your yard: looks like a construction site for weeks
  • Your landscaping, pavers, or driveway: likely destroyed

Trenchless Repair (What We Do)

  • Access the sewer line through one or two small entry points
  • Rehabilitate the pipe from inside using lining or pipe-bursting technology
  • No excavation across your property
  • Timeline: 1–2 days in most cases
  • Cost: Often comparable to or less than traditional when you factor in landscape restoration
  • Your yard: stays intact

Not every sewer problem requires excavation — but not every problem qualifies for trenchless

We’ll be honest with you about which method is right for your situation.

Trenchless is typically appropriate for:

  • Cracked or deteriorating clay sewer pipes (most common in LA’s pre-1975 homes)
  • Root intrusion that has damaged but not collapsed the pipe
  • Minor to moderate pipe offset at joints
  • Corrosion and scale buildup reducing flow diameter
  • Sewer lines running under landscaping, driveways, or patios you want to preserve

Traditional excavation may be necessary for:

  • Complete pipe collapse with no remaining structural integrity
  • Severely offset or belly sections that cannot be lined
  • Access issues that prevent liner installation
  • Some cases of extensive root intrusion throughout the line

This is why we start with a camera inspection. You see exactly what’s in your pipe — on a monitor, in real time — before we recommend anything or quote any work.

Our trenchless sewer repair process

1

Sewer Camera Inspection

We run a camera through your sewer line and you see exactly what’s happening — cracks, roots, offset joints, sludge buildup — on a monitor in real time. We record the video and provide it with your report. No guessing. No overselling.

2

Written Assessment

Based on the camera footage, we give you a written assessment and recommendation: trenchless lining, pipe bursting, spot excavation, or other approach. We explain why, in plain English.

3

Written Quote — No Work Starts Without Your Approval

You get a detailed written quote before any work begins. The price you approve is the price you pay.

4

Trenchless Repair

Cured-In-Place Pipe Lining (CIPP): We insert a flexible liner coated with epoxy resin, position it inside the damaged pipe, and cure it in place. The result is a smooth, jointless pipe inside your original pipe — roots can’t penetrate it.

Pipe Bursting: For pipes needing full replacement, we pull a bursting head through the old pipe while simultaneously pulling a new HDPE pipe behind it.

5

Final Camera Inspection

We run the camera again after work is complete so you can see the finished repair. This is how we verify our work — and show you it’s done right.

What we typically find in West LA and Valley sewer lines

Root Intrusion (Most Common)

LA’s mature trees — ficus, willow, eucalyptus, magnolia — pursue water through clay sewer pipe joints. Even small cracks become large ones as roots grow and expand.

Cracked Clay Pipe

Most homes in West LA and the Valley built before 1975 have clay sewer lines. Clay is durable but brittle — ground movement, tree roots, and age cause cracking. Cracked clay is the ideal candidate for trenchless lining.

Offset Joints

Ground settlement and seismic activity cause sewer pipe sections to shift out of alignment. Small offsets can be lined; larger offsets may require spot excavation.

Grease Buildup

Grease accumulates in sewer lines over years. When combined with root intrusion, it can cause complete blockages. Jetting combined with lining is a common solution.

Pipe Bellies

Sections of pipe that have settled and now hold water, causing recurring backups. Requires assessment to determine if trenchless or excavation is the right fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does trenchless sewer lining last?

Properly installed cured-in-place pipe liners typically have a service life of 50+ years. The liner becomes a new pipe inside your old one — smooth, jointless, and root-resistant.

Is trenchless more expensive than traditional excavation?

Not always. The pipe work itself is often similar in cost. But when you factor in landscape restoration, driveway or pavement repair, and soil compaction after traditional excavation — trenchless usually comes out less expensive in total. We’ll give you both options so you can compare.

Does trenchless work for all pipe materials?

Trenchless lining works with clay, cast iron, concrete, and many other existing pipe materials. It does not work well on pipes that are fully collapsed. That’s why the camera inspection is the essential first step.

How long does the repair take?

Most trenchless jobs are completed in 1–2 days. Camera inspection is typically done the same day we quote.

Will there be any yard disruption at all?

Minimal. We typically need access at a cleanout or occasionally at one or two small dig points. We do not run trenches across your yard.

Does my homeowner’s insurance cover sewer repair?

Standard homeowner’s policies often exclude sewer line coverage, but many insurers offer a sewer/water line rider for $5–$15/month. If you have this coverage, we can provide documentation for your claim. Ask when you call.
