Shut off your main water supply
The main shutoff is usually at the street in a rectangular concrete box (the meter box) — the valve on the house side of the meter. Many homes also have a secondary shutoff in the garage. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Turn off your water heater
Gas: set the dial to PILOT. Electric: flip the water heater breaker in your panel. Running a water heater with no water supply can damage the unit.
Open a low faucet to relieve pressure
Open the lowest faucet in the house — usually a hose bib or laundry sink — to drain remaining water and relieve pressure from the lines.
Stay away from standing water near electricity
If water is near an electrical panel, outlets, or appliances, do not walk through it. Turn off the breaker for affected areas at the main panel if it is safe to reach.
