How to Fix Low Shower Pressure

How to Fix Low Shower Pressure

Single-fixture pressure issues are usually 5-minute fixes.

TL;DR

If only the shower has low pressure (other fixtures normal), the problem is the showerhead, valve cartridge, or built-in flow restrictor. Vinegar-clean the showerhead first. If still low, inspect the cartridge.

What’s in this guide

  1. Verify single-fixture issue
  2. Clean showerhead
  3. Remove flow restrictor
  4. Cartridge issues

Low pressure at just the shower (other fixtures fine) is almost always the showerhead or shower valve. Whole-house pressure problems are different.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Tools

  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Pin or paperclip
  • Vinegar

Materials

  • Replacement showerhead $25 if old

Step-by-Step Instructions

Verify Other Fixtures Are Fine

Test bathroom sink and kitchen sink. Normal pressure = shower-only issue.

Tip: Test all bathroom fixtures: shower, tub, sink. If all bathroom fixtures slow = different problem.

Vinegar-Clean Showerhead

Most common fix. See showerhead cleaning guide. Hard LA water clogs nozzles.

Tip: Solves 90% of “low pressure” complaints.

Check Flow Restrictor

Modern showerheads have plastic flow restrictors. Remove for higher flow (legal compliance applies to manufacturers, not consumers).

Tip: Removing flow restrictor uses more water — your bill will reflect this.

Inspect Shower Valve Cartridge

If showerhead is clean and restrictor is out, cartridge may be debris-clogged. See shower cartridge guide.

Tip: Cartridge debris is rare but happens after recent plumbing work upstream.

Pro Notes from Plumb Inc
Mike Torres · Master Plumber, serving Los Angeles since 2014

In hard SFV water, showerheads need cleaning every 3-4 months. Set a quarterly calendar reminder. The flow drop is gradual — you don’t notice until it’s severe.

Don’t over-pressurize as fix

Increasing whole-house pressure to compensate for clogged showerhead damages everything else.

Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls

Encino

Brand new showerhead, immediate clog

Customer installed new showerhead, then 4 weeks later flow dropped to weak. Hard water clogged it. Vinegar restored. Recommended monthly cleaning + softener install.

When to Call a Plumber Instead

DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:

  • Whole-house pressure problem
  • Cartridge or valve replacement needed
  • Stuck or damaged showerhead

Frequently Asked Questions

How often clean showerhead?

SFV: every 3-4 months. Coastal: 8-12 months.

Are high-flow showerheads worth it?

Subjective. They use more water. Test in store.

Why hot pressure lower than cold?

Sediment in water heater clogs hot supply.

Can I replace whole valve myself?

Cartridge yes. Whole valve no — requires opening wall.

Pressure booster pump?

For whole-house only. Won’t help single fixture clogs.
