How to Install or Replace an Outdoor Hose Bib

How to Install or Replace an Outdoor Hose Bib

Frost-free hose bibs prevent freezing in colder LA neighborhoods. 60-minute project.

TL;DR

Outdoor hose bib replacement requires shutting off water and access from inside the wall. Frost-free hose bibs are recommended for LA homes — the long stem keeps the actual valve inside the heated wall.

What’s in this guide

  1. Choose hose bib type
  2. Tools
  3. Disconnect old
  4. Install new
  5. Test

Outdoor hose bibs (sometimes called sillcocks or spigots) take a beating from sun, weather, and use. Replacement is a 60-minute project once you locate the connection inside the wall.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Tools

  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Pipe wrench (sometimes)
  • Caulk gun

Materials

  • Frost-free hose bib (8″ or 12″ stem) $25–$45
  • Plumber’s tape
  • Exterior caulk
  • Replacement supply line if needed

Step-by-Step Instructions

Shut Off Water Supply

Locate shutoff for the hose bib branch (sometimes inside crawlspace, basement, or near where exterior wall meets foundation).

Tip: No dedicated shutoff? Use the main shutoff.

Disconnect Old Hose Bib

Remove screws holding the flange to the exterior wall. Pull bib out about an inch. Inside the wall, the bib threads into a 90-degree elbow on the supply line.

Tip: Frost-free types have a long brass shaft extending into the wall.

Disconnect Inside the Wall

Some installations are accessible from a basement or crawlspace. Others require opening a small section of interior drywall to access. Unscrew the bib counter-clockwise from the supply.

Tip: Most LA homes have access from a crawlspace. Newer slab foundations often require interior access.

Install New Bib

Apply plumber’s tape to the threads. Thread into supply, hand-tight + 1/4 turn. From outside, slide the bib into the wall opening, secure flange with screws.

Tip: Frost-free bibs must be installed with a slight downward pitch toward outside so they fully drain.

Caulk and Test

Apply exterior caulk around the wall flange to seal against water intrusion. Restore water. Test bib full-on, full-off, no leaks.

Tip: Wait 24 hours and check for any leaks at the inside-wall connection too.

In LA neighborhoods that occasionally see freezing temperatures (Tujunga, Sunland, parts of Pasadena foothills, La Cañada), frost-free hose bibs are mandatory. The valve assembly sits 8-12 inches inside the heated wall, preventing freezing. Standard hose bibs in these neighborhoods crack in cold snaps.

Even with frost-free bibs, leaving a hose attached defeats the freeze protection.

Standard bib cracked from freeze

Standard hose bib cracked during a 26°F night. Replaced with 12″ frost-free model. No issues since.

When to Call a Plumber Instead

DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:

  • No accessible interior connection
  • Slab foundation home
  • Pipe behind wall is corroded
  • You don’t have a working shutoff

Frequently Asked Questions

Why frost-free?

Valve sits inside heated wall. Standard valves at the wall surface freeze in cold weather.

How long is the standard stem?

8″ for thin walls, 12″ for typical exterior walls.

Can I add a hose bib where there isn’t one?

Yes but requires running new supply line — pro work.

Why does my bib leak when off?

Internal valve seat or washer worn. Replace.

Can I just repair instead of replace?

Possibly — washer-only kits exist. But replacement is often easier and only $20–$30 more.
