Step-by-Step Instructions

BEFORE Emergency: Locate Your Main Shutoff

Walk to the front of your house. The water meter is usually at the property line. Inside the meter box is the meter’s shutoff valve. Some homes also have a shutoff at the foundation. Test that you can turn it off.

Tip: Do this NOW, not during an emergency. Most LA homeowners have never tested their main shutoff.

STEP 1: Shut Off Water at Main

Walk briskly (don’t run on wet floors) to the main shutoff. Turn clockwise until tight. This stops new water from flowing into the leak.

Tip: On older homes with stuck valves, you may need a wrench. Keep one near the meter.

STEP 2: Turn Off Water Heater

For gas heaters: turn gas valve to “Pilot” or “Off.” For electric: flip breaker. Without water flow, water heater elements can burn out from running dry.

Tip: Especially important if water main is shut off for more than 30 minutes.

STEP 3: Cut Power to Affected Area

Water + electricity = fire and shock. Flip breakers for any room with active water. Don’t enter water with active electricity in the room.

Tip: Know your breaker panel layout BEFORE emergency.

STEP 4: Document Everything

Photo and video the leak source, water damage, surroundings. Critical for insurance claims.

Tip: Take photos before any cleanup or mitigation.

STEP 5: Call Plumber and Insurance

Call emergency plumber first (water mitigation immediate priority). Then call insurance to start claim process.

Tip: 24/7 emergency plumbers can be reached in 45-90 minutes in LA.

Mike Torres · Master Plumber, serving Los Angeles since 2014

Show every adult in your house where the main shutoff is. Test it together. The number of LA homes we visit where the homeowner has no idea where their shutoff is would shock you. Make this a 5-minute family drill.

Don’t use electrical appliances near water

Wet outlets and standing water with electricity is fatal. Cut power first.

Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls

NoHo

Burst pipe overnight, owner asleep

Galvanized supply line burst at 2 AM. Owner woke at 6 AM to flooded living room. Main shutoff was at the meter — owner had never used it. Took 15 minutes to locate, fight the seized valve, and cut water off. Damage: $32,000. With faster response: under $5,000.

When to Call a Plumber Instead

DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:

  • ALL emergencies — call as soon as water is off
  • Sewer backup
  • Gas smell with water leak
  • Electrical components in water

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I have a wrench at the meter?

Yes. Old valves seize. Cheap insurance.

How long can I leave water off?

Hours is fine. Days requires draining water heater to prevent damage.

Can I fix it myself in an emergency?

Sometimes. Burst pipe at a connection: yes (turn water off, replace fitting). Burst supply line in wall: no (call pro).

Who pays for emergency plumber?

Standard plumbing repair: you. Insurance covers DAMAGE caused by the leak, not the repair itself.

What about gas line emergencies?

Different protocol — leave the area, call SoCalGas (1-800-427-2200), then call a plumber.
