How to Fix a Slow Draining Bathtub

How to Fix a Slow Draining Bathtub

99% of slow tub drains are hair tangles in the drain stopper assembly. Here’s the 10-minute fix.

TL;DR

Bathtub drains slow because hair wraps around the drain stopper mechanism (the part you push or twist to seal). Pull the stopper out, clean the hair, replace. 10 minutes. No tools beyond pliers and disposable gloves.

What’s in this guide

  1. Identify your stopper type
  2. Remove the stopper
  3. Clean the hair tangle
  4. Reinstall and test

Slow tub drains are the easiest plumbing problem to fix in your house. The cause is universal: hair tangles around the drain stopper mechanism just below the drain opening. The fix takes 10 minutes with no special tools.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Tools

  • Disposable gloves
  • Needle-nose pliers (some stoppers)
  • Phillips screwdriver (some stoppers)
  • Plastic hair-snake / Zip-It

Materials

  • Replacement drain stopper if old one is corroded ($5–$15)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Identify Your Stopper Type

Look at your drain. Toe-touch (push to open/close): pulls straight up after 30 seconds of twisting. Pop-up (lever near overflow): connects to a linkage rod. Trip-lever (overflow plate has a knob/lever): linked stopper inside the drain pipe. Lift-and-turn: rotate handle, then lift up.

Tip: Most modern tubs (post-1990) are toe-touch or lift-and-turn — easiest to remove. Older tubs are pop-up or trip-lever — slightly more complex.

Remove the Stopper

Toe-touch: rotate counter-clockwise while pulling up. Lift-and-turn: rotate handle to open, then lift up sharply. Pop-up: pull up from drain, then disconnect the linkage. Trip-lever: unscrew the overflow plate, pull out the linkage assembly with attached stopper.

Tip: Trip-lever stoppers are the trickiest — the entire mechanism comes out the overflow opening, not the drain.

Clean the Hair

Wear gloves. Pull off the visible hair from the stopper. Use the Zip-It tool down the drain to grab hair deeper. The combined catch from a year of buildup is unpleasant — have a trash bag ready.

Tip: Take a photo of the stopper before disassembly. Reassembly is easier with reference.

Reinstall and Test

Reverse the removal procedure. Toe-touch: drop in, push down while rotating clockwise to engage. Lift-and-turn: drop in, push down while rotating to lock. Run hot water for 1 minute to confirm fast drainage.

Tip: If your tub is still slow after cleaning, the clog is deeper in the drain (P-trap area). Use the Zip-It deeper or call a plumber for a 25-foot hand auger.

Mesh hair catchers ($5) over the drain prevent 95% of recurring slow drains. We install them as standard during any drain service in homes with kids or long-haired household members. Cheap insurance.

Don’t pour boiling water down the drain

Hot tap water (130°F) is fine. Actual boiling water (212°F) can crack porcelain tubs.

Real Scenarios from Our LA Service Calls

Hancock Park

Toilet stopper hair removal

Homeowner thought their pop-up stopper had failed because no amount of plunging cleared the slow drainage. Investigation: hair had wrapped completely around the stopper rod, creating a near-total blockage just below the drain. Cleaned, took 8 minutes. Saved a $185 service call by knowing where to look.

When to Call a Plumber Instead

DIY isn’t always the right call. Bring in a licensed plumber if any of these apply:

  • Tub drain still slow after stopper cleaning
  • Multiple drains slow simultaneously (likely main line)
  • Sewer smell from drain (P-trap or vent issue)
  • You can’t remove a corroded stopper

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my tub drain?

Every 3–6 months for households with long hair. Annually for households without.

Will baking soda and vinegar work?

For minor slowdowns or odors, yes. For real hair clogs, no — physical removal is required.

My drain stopper is broken — replace?

Universal replacement stoppers ($5–$15) fit most modern tubs. Match the type (toe-touch, lift-and-turn, etc.) and the brand if possible.

Can I use Drano in a tub drain?

We don’t recommend it. Damages stopper rubber gaskets. Mechanical removal is faster and safer.

Why does my tub gurgle when toilet flushes?

Vent stack issue — the plumbing vent is partially blocked, causing negative pressure. Different problem; call a plumber.
